My husband recently switched to Verizon because he gets better service at work with Verizon than he does with his previous carrier. To save money in the long run, I really have to make the switch too. I have been agonizing over the switch for some months now.

I'm a long time Blackberry user, but as the community manager for this site, the Blackberry internet browser isn't suited to approve events and suspend spammers on the go. I was really excited when RIM introduced the Torch, but you can only get it on AT&T. So until yesterday, I thought I would have to get a Droid when making the switch to Verizon (Verizon does not carry the Blackberry Bold or the Torch).

Then the news comes that the iPhone is coming to Verizon with pre-orders being taken starting February 3, 2011!! Now I'm really agonizing...

- should I get a Droid phone now or wait for the iPhone?

- do you think that the Verizon iPhone is going to cut deeply intro Droid sales?

Well of course being a hardcore Apple person I would have to say get the iPhone :-)

Droids are nice but just not 100% meaning they aren't polished like an Apple product. They seem to do things just enough to get by but don't go the extra distance to add the perfection that Apple brings to their products. Plus if you already have an iPad how could you NOT want an iPhone?

I am sure the Droids will improve overtime. In fact I hear the new Honeycomb OS for tablets coming out soon will be really nice but again they are going to be lagging behind Apple.

I do think Verizon is going to steal a lot of customers from AT&T. However it is important for current AT&T iPhone users to note that you can't surfing or use the data portion of the phone while you are on a call. For people use to that it could be a HUGE disadvantage. For current Verizon customers use to that it won't be a big deal.

Being a iPhone/iPad developer I got my hands on the newest beta yesterday and I can say there are some very nice little touches coming to the iPhone/iPad that include some awesome multi-gesture moves to move around the OS. I think most users will like these small but nice features. Who knows what Apple has in store for a new iPhone release in June and I am assuming an April launch for the new iPad 2. Whatever it is I am sure it will be great!

Keep us all posted on what you decide to get. :-)

Thanks 3Pigs, your input is always helpful.

Couple questions for the iPhone users

1 - do people miss having a keyboard (that's the #1 reason I have had a hard time giving up my Blackberry)

2 - does anyone have the issue of the phone hanging up when you put it up to your face. Not sure if I'm the only one who has this issue but every time I use my husband's droid, my cheek hangs up the call (lol). Maybe its just me.

I used to be a huge Palm Treo user that had a keyboard and had the same concern about going to the iPhone keyboard. It is a non-issue. It becomes second nature.

In regards to the phone hanging up when it comes to your face that is another non-issue. Apple worked very hard on making sure that doesn't happen with there phone. There was a glitch in one of the software updates about a year ago where there was a problem but Apple quickly released an update and all is good.

You know which phone you need :-) the only REAL SmartPhone there is - the iPhone! :-)

I forgot to add one more point in regards to Droid vs. iPhone.

In my real life job I am a computer security expert. It is important to point out that apps on the iPhone are a whole lot more secure then those you can get in the Android world. That isn't to say that something can't happen security wise with an iPhone but it is harder to do 'funny stuff / hacker type things' with apps from Apple. Apple reviews ALL apps before there are approved. Android doesn't do that. Google does have the ability to shut an app down if it does something funny but the damage could be done way before someone knows what has happened.

Again it is important to know there are a lot of clever people out there and I can easily say 'anything' can happen but I do sleep a bit easier at night and am a little more confident that my iPhone is secure. The same goes for my Mac as well. I would MUCH rather use a Mac then a PC when I am playing around on the Internet.

Now watch tomorrow a HUGE iPhone vulnerability will strike and I will eat my words :-)

P.S. the company I work for is a HUGE BlackBerry user however we are now bringing iPhones/iPads/and Mac's into our environment. I am on the security team that is part of the security testing for these products. Our BlackBerries are considered a HIGH risk. The iPhone and iPad are not considered as such.

Hope this helps :-)

Get the iPhone.

My personal opinion on why Droid sales have been so high until recently is that Droid was the only iPhone like option available on other carriers.

Why get a copy when you can get the real thing.

I've been using my iPhone for a year & still very happy.  I also program iPhones too.

My wife who isn't a techie loves using her iPhone.

My son, a former blackberry user, upgraded to an iPhone.  He has never looked back.  He tells me daily how much he loves his iPhone.

Two other kids also love their iPhones as well.

I'm waiting to see what will happen when the droid people finally get the iPhone on their carrier.

It should get interesting.

I haven't heard from any droid users, so it looks like Feb 10 I will be getting my iPhone.

I'm leaning towards the Droid 2...it has the keyboard and the touch screen...I got really burned with a bad touch screen phone and I just don't want to deal with not having the option again!

I know the iPhone is great...but I tend to rebel against the "norm" and therefore own nothing with an "i" in front of it!  ;-)

Besides...you can get the Droid 2 with a cool R2D2 look!  hehe

I have the Droid 2, and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Cannot say enough good about it. I know quite a few iphone users who have traded their iphones in for a Droid...they are all VERY happy they did :0). I'm with Verizon, and have no intention of getting an iphone when it comes to Verizon. You couldn't pay me to switch lol. And the iphone apps are now avail on Droid, so apps really isn't an issue in my opinion, it's the operating system. A phone powered by Google, is a very good thing.
Lori and newtotracy, thank you for your input...you've made some valid arguments...would love to hear from more people.

I have both phones at the moment. I have had the iphone for over a year and have had many problems including not being able to make calls out or receive them. I have been in the same location for 8 years and have had the same carrier for 10. The signal fluctuates now for some reason but that doesn't effect my being able to make calls as it can have a full signal and still won't call out.  Also got locked out of all my gps apps and can't get them back unless I restore the phone but.....when you sink back your info to the phone it disables it again.

Frustrated with all the problems I was having I purchased a droid x and switched to verizon. I must say I am very pleased with the droid x. I think it far surpasses the iphone in every way from phone connection, gps and the camera is awesome as well. The droid comes with most of the same apps the iphone did. Most apps for android are free as well.  The internet is much faster too.

I was a Sprint Crackberry user for many years - business and personal. Always thought of it as the be-all, end-all smartphone. Another reason for not changing phones was due to the fact that I am pretty rough on my stuff - I can't "baby" a phone (or car) and was concerned about a touchscreen interface being too fragile.

Well, as a loyal Sprint Premier Business customer for many years, they practically gave me a new EVO 4G phone when they came out in June of '09. So, I kept them both and WOW, I was then and remain blown away with the features and functionality of this phone. I am a gadget freak and love the fact that the Android based phones are infinitely customizable.

I believe that is the biggest difference between Apple and Android based phones or products - customization. Apple locks their devices, which is ok for many people but to me it's a freedom to tinker issue. Once I buy a phone or computer, it's MINE to do as I please. And, I always want more from the device than the manufacturer can conceive.

Just my 2 cents! Have fun with your research as this is an exciting time in our technological evolution!

Rick and Donna, that's two more votes for Droid! This is getting interesting.
