I'd like to hear from Tracyites who drive the Altamont Pass at night, in winter, such as right about now.

How foggy is it in general, what's visibility like?  For someone going West and driving back in mid-evening, is it pea-soup thick, or depends on the altitude, or what?  If your job ends late, you have little choice but to do it; but if it's an optional evening event, say in SF or even Pleasanton, would you go, or stay home? And for info, how reliable are sites like NOAA, Weatherbug, or even the evening news weather?

I haven't had to drive over the Altamont in the fog, but I must comment that people in Tracy really need to remember to put on their lights when the fog is out. Even if you can see without your lights, you need to help others out by turning on your lights so they can see YOU!
I drive the Altamont very regularly en route home from work. The fog is super thick and you cannot use your high beams becuase all that does is reflect the light off the fog. The visibility is only feet ahead of you sometimes and you have to rely on the box dots on the road. I have also missed the turns on the way to my house because I could not see the streets. If there was an optional evening event that would put me in the fog, I would still go, but I would not want my wife or mother to go. There is always that concern that there is something in the roadway that you wont see until you about to hit it. It is scary.
Thanks for this!  I was feeling like a true "poulet" for not being inclined to get out at night and go West into low visibility weather.  It's not worth it for me unless it's something absolutely critical.
