Time for a toast

I witnessed an amazing inspirational speech contest this morning at Tracy Toastmasters. I volunteered to be the emcee, which allowed me to really enjoy the speeches without being a judge or contestant. This contest has been an annual activity and one of the greatest catalysts for growth for me in recent history. I decided not to…See More

New book raises money for cancer research

This is it…drumroll…my 200th blog post. Cue the balloon drop and blow the kazoos! It’s mostly a milestone for me, but maybe for a few of you too. Especially Ray Basile who said “Dude, you should start blogging,” and those who said “I read every one of your stories to my teenagers,” and the many readers who told me, “Hey, you should collect your best blog posts into a book!”Even with over 65,000 views of the blog so far, I…See More

Make your impression

Here I am in the so-called Act II of my life, waking up after intermission to an important realization: I am losing my fear of failing. I still fail a lot, but I’m somehow not letting it stop me from taking on more new things. It’s like I’m intentionally raising the risk that others may criticize or laugh at me but it feels OK. Am I losing my marbles? As I walk this thin line between crazy and sane, I am reminded of…See More

Hearing the "R" word

After investing so much emotion to support my brother Jeff in his cancer battle, I’m having trouble forming the words to express my joy over this.  Since so many of you followed the story, prayed for his health and gave money to my marathon fundraiser last year, I’d like you to hear the latest update in Jeff’s own words:“Seldom in one’s life can a single word evoke so much emotion as the one Mo and I heard at Dr. Singhal’s…See More

If only I knew (pass this on to new graduates)

This is an unsolicited letter written by my current self to my self at age eighteen. Feel free to share with the young adults in your life if you dare. Dear Younger David:This is your future self coming back to give you some advice.  Yes, those science fiction movies are true and time travel is totally achievable. I wanted…See More

Ripples bounce back

You’ve all heard the analogy… even a tiny pebble thrown into the ocean creates ripples that eventually become waves. The point is that when you do a seemingly small thing for another person, it can have a much larger impact than you ever thought possible. Now imagine the “water” is in a confined space. I noticed this when I was cleaning my small swimming pool this morning. I dipped the net into the still water surface. The…See More

The elastic limit

Our high school science teacher passed out rubber bands to the class and asked us to slowly stretch them between our fingers.  A little more.  A little more.  Each of us stopped when we knew it was about to snap.  He was illustrating the concept of the elastic limit, that point where an elastic substance will…See More

Good news top 9

It’s been a rough couple of weeks and I am literally looking for good news today. If you clicked to read this based on the title, you’re probably looking for good news too.  My current mental state is a result of recent human loss, hostility and uncertainty on a worldwide scale. Even the weather is depressing right now.   When…See More

Second seat on the left

I visited a friend in the hospital last night.  Tom Rosten was in a serious car accident and is in serious condition as I write this.  He was hooked up to all the tubes and wires and monitors that ICU has to offer. He was unable to speak but the nurse assured me he could hear us. I stood there wondering what I would say……See More

My brother's keeper

When you catch a fish big enough to take home, that’s called a keeper.  When you hear a bit of advice that’s big enough to take to heart, that’s a keeper too. In the midst of my brother Jeff’s battle with Multiple Myeloma, he uttered a keeper today. We were talking about what keeps him going with such a positive attitude through…See More

The time of your life

Much has been written and sung about the passage of time, and whether we make the most of every minute.  We cruise along the road of life like a cross-country family vacation, stopping at pre-determined attractions to have the “time of our lives.” If we look out the window in between, we can also see untouchable wonders gliding by…See More
