Distracted-Driving Survey in Calif. Finds Average of Two Per Minute Per Location

A tabulation earlier this month of distracted driving in California produced some alarming results. The California Friday Night Live Partnership stationed students at 62 intersections near schools around the state for an hour at each location and found more than 6,700 instances of distracted driving, an average of ab...out 108 per intersection and nearly two per minute.

Distractions uncovered by the students ranged from talking or texting on a handheld phone to kissing, writing and feeding children. The most common distracting activities engaged in by motorists and the approximate average of each per location were as follows:

· Eating or drinking, 1,794 instances, 29 per location

· Using a cellphone without hands-free device, 1,212, 19

· Texting or reading a cellphone, 1,099, 17

· Personal grooming, 565, 9

· Smoking, 455, 7

· Extreme volume on radio, 387, 6

· Reaching into passenger/back seat, 233, 3

· Wearing headphones, 194, 3

· Reading, 85, 1

· Other (not specified), 126, 2



The groups of counties with the number of locations, total and highest rate of distracted motorists included:

· Sacramento/San Joaquin/Stanislaus/Sutter counties, 16 locations, 2,055 instances, average of 128.4 distracted drivers per site

· Fresno/Tulare counties, 8, 1,261, 157.6

· Santa Cruz/San Mateo counties, 6, 818, 136.3

· Glenn/Lassen/Shasta counties, 8, 606, 75.8
