Restaurant Review "Firkin & Beaver", 10/23

Lately I have been eager to try what I thought was I micro brewery type of place, Firkin & Beaver. Friday night we headed over there for this week's date night.

We visited Firkin & Beaver on Friday night at about 8pm. It seems like maybe an English or Irish pub rather than a micro-brewery. The restaurant was pretty busy, people outside eating on the patio and it was pretty busy inside as well. It was close to a full house but still not too busy to get seated right away.

The service was a little slow; I think they only had two servers for the whole place.

The food was an interesting mix of "traditional" English food, cottage pie, fish and chips and typical American food, salads, burgers and such. My Fiancé chose the cottage pie for $7.95, meat, gravy, vegetables and mashed potatoes on top. He was pleasantly surprised. He was pleased, he wished it had more veggies but the flavor was good. He also ordered a pre-dinner salad; it actually had mixed greens, not just iceberg lettuce as we so commonly see lately. The salad was $3.95 and he said it was worth it, only thing was they don't really give you a choice of dressing, they choose this vinaigrette and it had quite a bite. I chose to have their special of Tilapia with bacon wrapped scallops with rice and veggies for $12.95. The Tilapia was ok, it tasted like they cooked it with sugar, but since I like sweet food, it worked for me. The bacon wrapped scallops, were just OK, they were salty and a little tough. The veggies were fresh and great.

For dessert they had a carrot cake on special for $1.95. That was pretty darn good.

I decided to have a Cosmo... WOW $8.25 for pink tinted vodka, which wasn’t even served in a Martini glass, "they ran out". I was not pleased. They gladly exchanged it for a Raspberry Lemon drop that was quite tasty, still $8.25. FYI, the beer is cold and not flat. Good on the beer.

** MUST READ** Last, but NOT least... you have to know how incredibly loud the restaurant was. They were crankin up the tunes far beyond restaurant level. We could not hear each other talk. It was too load, and because of that we will always think twice before visiting again.

Love love LOVE M&J Bistro. Excellent food at a reasonable price.

I agree it's more of a bar than a restaurant, but that doesn't bother me at all.

wow, it sounds like a "Firkin Rip off" I do wish them well, but I have seen many that get popular then forget what made them so popular.

My Friend & I went to the Firkin & Beaver one night. The beer was ice cold. The food was good, we had fish & chips, a little pricey for me, but yeah, the music was too LOUD for us, too!

My two favorite restaurants are the Thai Cafe on Central and 6th and M&J Bistro on N. Tracy Blvd in the Big Lots/Ace Hardware Parking lot. I want to try out Helm's Ale House soon.

Helm's is open? Cool. We need to schedule a Tracy Virtual Office field trip! :-)

The Beaver is OK, I agree the place is loud, service is good, food is fair (I have a few bad meals their) in general it's OK. More of a bar than restaurant. That said, it can be good fun when you meet friend for a beer...

Just a thought you should try Helm's Ale House on the corner of 10th and Central not to loud and good prices
