I was reading the San Joaquin Herald today, and found on the front page an article dealing with a group that advocate that all citizens carry guns. "Wow", I thought to myself, 'how do I feel about that"? My first responce was concern. People walking around armed, is a very sobering thought. I envisioned our downtown area with all my neighbors sporting holsters, men with 9mm's,revolvers,and desert eagle magnums for those of us who are compensating, ladies with cute shiny pistols and fashion forward aceseries. A virual modern wild west. Then I really thought about it. Our crime rate is up, our police force is being downsized and all our public servent do is give lip service with no solution to our problem. There was a town meeting on the subject of crime a few weeks back and I was surprised that the police chief who was hired by our city didn't even know what a 187 was. (187 is the code for murder) Things like that kind of concern me and I'm not alone. I must give praise though to our officers, they are doing their best and even desided to forgo a raise later on this year to save some jobs. That makes me feel like they really do care about our town. The issue though is they can't be every where they're needed. Although the idea of carrying a gun is sobering, I also know that other states like Texas who advocate the right to bear arms seem to have less crime (at least less armed robberies), even oklahoma has a law that says you can shoot someone as long as they're on your property weather they are facing you or runing from your property. It sounds a bit drastic but it works for them. I have been to these states and people are alot more polite. You have to be causes true but shoot outs are not an every day acurance. My feeling on the matter. If things keep going the way they are it might not be a bad idea, at least till crime goes down , we get more law enforcment, or better public servents who hire administraters who will get the job done.

Thank you jason. you and tommytat hit it on the head. Guns aren't for every one, but we can't lose site of the fact that our rights are being taken away and the only way to stop that is to show we are smart enogh to poses those rights that the founding fathers provided for us in the constitution. The right to bare arms is a privelage that if we don't charish will be taken from us based on the insinuation that we can't handle the responsability. Bey the way thank you for your service to our country, especialy in a time like it was back then.

My response to "should we carry a gun". I feel as good as our police are in Tracy and for that matter any town, they can not possible protect all of us 24/7. True a lot of people should not be allowed to carry based on past history but a heck of a lot should be allowed and it needs to be a personal choice. Myself for example, I have no criminal record, I am a veteran of our military and the branch was Infantry. Our government felt like I was able to carry at the ripe age of 18 when they handed me a M-16 and sent me to Vietnam, why does society have such a problem with this?? Why is it most liberals are dead against allowing good citizens to carry? Who was it who said "A conservative is just a liberal who has been mugged."

Well Chris a Armed soceity is a polite one.Education in the proper use of firearms and saftey keeps you from being a victim.I am not saying to be a vigilante.Let the police do their jobs and the courts do their failed attempts for justice. It is our rights under the 2nd ammendment to keep and bear arms.Which some politicians are dwindling away with draconion laws and registration(opps)I mean regulations. No one is more reponsable for our saftey and protection, then ourselves.Saying that though,If you do bear arms, comes big responsibility. Can you use it to protect yourself or your family.

Yes but whats to stop those who do register their weapons from turning vigilante their is a thin line between protecting your loved ones and becoming americas most wanted criminal. I too was taught that I had the right to bear arms but think about this if you did own a gun and someone broke into your house they could easily use it against YOU or the one you love I am just saying let the police do their job and we can do ours by reporting suspicious behavior not shooting anyone who looks suspicous.

I wasn't thinking vigalanty. I meant regular people who go trough the proper chanels of registering and following the law. I'm not a gun nut or even an NRA member(I don't even own a gun) but when I went to school I was taught that I had the right to bear arms. Not to deal out my version of justice, but to protect myself and those I love in times of need. It's sad that it is beginning to look like that time may be comeing sooner than any of us may like.

Guns don't kill people, People kill people and to have a bunch of vigilantes running around town with guns doesn't make me feel any safer that just means that people with a lot more brain power than your normal run of the mill thugs are going to be walking around fully loaded and ready to shoot anyone who they THINK! is going to hurt them or steal from them or even if it is just a homeless person looking for recycling who gives us the right to play judge, jury and executioner or for that matter God, who are we to judge somebody else.
